This Nvidia chart shows why the AI compute shortage remains acute

Posted on by admin

This week has shown that the appetite to build out AI infrastructure and put it to use isn’t slowing down, contrary to market jitters.

Rental rates for older-generation Nvidia (NVDA) GPUs, known as Blackwell and Hopper, continue to rise, suggesting that the shortage of compute remains acute, BCA Research chief economist Peter Berezin pointed out (see chart below).

An acute shortage occurs when demand outstrips supply.

“I think we are heading for an AI capex bust but probably not until 2028,” Berezin said.

Add it to the fresh list of bullish indicators on AI, which has helped bring the bulls back into top momentum tech names such as Micron (MU), Sandisk (SNDK), and Broadcom (AVGO).

South Korean memory-chip player SK Hynix (SKHY) said on Wednesday it plans to return a total of $75 billion to shareholders this year through stock buybacks and dividends.

This was on the heels of the company’s third quarter revenue and operating profit both hitting record highs for a sixth straight quarter.

“Tight supply and demand conditions continued due to growing demand for AI memory, leading to sustained rise in memory prices,” SK Hynix CFO Woo-hyun Kim said on the earnings call.

Meanwhile, Anthropic’s hotly anticipated IPO prospectus, which dropped on Monday, has been well-received by the markets.

Anthropic’s (ANTH.PVT) first-half 2026 revenue surged to $16.3 billion from $1.1 billion a year earlier, the prospectus showed.

The prospectus shows Anthropic’s revenue base has become more diversified this year, with customers outside the top five now making up about 79% of sales, up from 64% in the first quarter.

In its simplest form, the metric indicates broader adoption of Anthropic’s technology.

“Overall, the numbers are showing massive eye-popping growth from a broadening group of customers as ANT aggressively goes after the enterprise market in this AI Revolution,” Yorkville Ives partner Dan Ives said.

Anthropic also had about $131.7 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments as of June 30, 2026.

That is an impressive amount of liquidity for a company that’s investing billions into AI infrastructure.
